Born with complex congenital heart disease, Schweickert has undergone multiple surgeries throughout her life. In 2024, she received a heart and liver transplant, marking a significant milestone in her medical journey.

In August 2025, Schweickert enrolled in Logan Academy at 海角社区 to begin working toward her General Educational Development (GED) credential. During the program, she demonstrated a strong commitment to her education, rarely missing class and accumulating 231 hours of attendance despite her health challenges.

While preparing for her GED, Schweickert also completed the college鈥檚 Healthcare Bridge program and earned a phlebotomy certificate, adding valuable healthcare training to her growing list of accomplishments.

In February 2026, nearly two years after her double-organ transplant, Schweickert passed her final GED test. With that milestone behind her, she set her sights on a new goal: becoming a nurse.

According to Michelle Guy, Manager of Logan Academy, Schweickert inspires her fellow students. 鈥淪he is just a fantastic person, kind and always so positive. She was very encouraging to the other students in our class and even gave a ride to a student who didn’t have transportation.鈥

Inspired by the medical professionals who cared for her throughout her life, Schweickert hopes to become a pediatric cardiology nurse, supporting and caring for children facing medical challenges similar to her own.

Schweickert is now enrolled at 海角社区, where she is completing prerequisites for the college鈥檚 nursing program. She is currently in her second semester of coursework as she works toward turning her personal experiences into a career dedicated to caring for others.

Her path from overcoming significant health challenges to earning her GED and pursuing higher education reflects her perseverance and commitment to building a future in health care. As she works toward becoming a pediatric cardiology nurse, Schweickert hopes to offer young patients and their families the same compassion and support that made a difference in her own life.

海角社区 officials have announced that the Legacy Plaza ribbon-cutting ceremony, originally scheduled for Nov. 2, will be postponed until early spring 2027 because a supply issue is affecting the production and delivery of plaques honoring recent college retirees.

College officials were notified this week that the plaque manufacturer has encountered a materials issue and cannot guarantee delivery before the scheduled ceremony.

鈥淲hile I share everyone’s disappointment in delaying the event, my primary concern is ensuring that this occasion receives the recognition and attention it deserves. The Legacy Plaza represents far more than just a memorial ceremony.  It is a lasting tribute to individuals whose dedication and service helped shape 海角社区,鈥 said 海角社区 President Dr. Kirk Overstreet. 鈥淚 believe it is important that we honor our retirees in a manner that is both complete and meaningful. Rather than proceed with a ceremony that may not include all the commemorative elements we intended, I felt it was more appropriate to postpone and ensure the event becomes the special occasion our retirees, supporters, and community deserve.鈥

With the holiday season approaching and cooler temperatures expected, college officials decided early spring was the best time to reschedule the outdoor event.

鈥淲hen the plaques are delivered, we will make an announcement regarding the new date,鈥 Overstreet said. 鈥淲e will look at the College calendar and select a date and time for this special event.鈥

The College will release a formal announcement with the rescheduled date and time once arrangements are finalized.

海角社区 appreciates the public鈥檚 understanding and looks forward to celebrating its retirees and the Legacy Plaza at the rescheduled ceremony.

Driving along Illinois Route 13 in Carterville, motorists can see the transformation taking place at 海角社区. Four major construction projects are underway, reshaping campus spaces and expanding opportunities for students across Southern Illinois.

Rendering of the outside of the West Entrance for 海角社区. Entrance has large windows with stairs and ramp in front.

What you can’t see is the work that began long before the first footing was dug.

Behind the construction equipment, blueprints, and new facilities are hours of research, planning, phone calls, paperwork, and grant writing. Securing funding requires staff members to navigate complex applications, document community needs, develop project plans and demonstrate how proposed investments will benefit students and the region.

At 海角社区, that work is paying dividends. State, federal, and private funding sources are helping the College advance construction projects, strengthen academic programs, purchase equipment, expand student support services, and prepare graduates for careers in high-demand fields.

The effort comes as Illinois community colleges face mounting financial pressures. Rising operating costs, increasing demand for workforce training, and the need to support students with diverse academic and economic needs have placed additional demands on already limited resources.

Yet community colleges remain essential to preparing residents for careers, strengthening local economies and providing affordable pathways to further education.

Grant funding helps bridge the gap between available resources and the needs of students, employers and communities.

鈥淕rant funding allows us to do things that would otherwise be out of reach,鈥 said 海角社区 President Dr. Kirk Overstreet. 鈥淚t helps us expand opportunities for students, strengthen our programs, invest in facilities and technology, and respond to the evolving needs of our communities. Many of the initiatives that make a difference in our region would not be possible without the support of our grant partners.鈥

Millions in Funding, Measurable Impact

During fiscal year 2026, 海角社区 spent approximately $8.8 million in direct expenses across more than 25 grants.

The funding included approximately $1.8 million through Illinois Community College Board grants, $4.4 million through construction grants, and $2.6 million through other federal and state grants.

Together, those resources supported facility improvements, academic and workforce programs, equipment and technology purchases, and services designed to help students persist and complete their education.

Grant awards do not materialize overnight. Each funding opportunity comes with its own requirements, deadlines, reporting obligations, and expectations for measuring results. Staff members must identify opportunities that align with college priorities, prepare competitive applications, and demonstrate that funds will be used responsibly.

Once an award is secured, the work continues through implementation, financial oversight, and required reporting.

For 海角社区, the process is an important part of responsible financial management, allowing the College to pursue improvements and opportunities that might otherwise be delayed or beyond its operating budget.

Building the Workforce of Tomorrow

Some of the most visible results of grant funding are taking shape in the College’s career and technical education facilities.

Funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration supports construction and renovation of facilities serving Welding, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Automotive Services and Auto Collision programs.

The improvements are designed to give students updated instructional spaces and hands-on training environments that reflect current industry standards.

For employers across Southern Illinois, investments in career and technical education can help strengthen the pipeline of workers prepared for skilled occupations. For students, access to modern equipment and relevant training can provide a pathway to employment and career advancement close to home.

海角社区 also receives annual federal funding through the Perkins Career and Technical Education program, administered by the Illinois Community College Board. Perkins funds support equipment, technology, instructional resources, professional development, and other activities that strengthen career and technical education programs.

Together, these funding sources help the College meet changing workforce needs while giving students practical, career-focused learning experiences.

Investing in Nursing and Health Sciences

Grant funding is also helping 海角社区 expand educational opportunities in nursing and health sciences.

In January 2025, the College received a $1.84 million Congressionally Directed Spending award through the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. The award supports renovation of approximately 9,900 square feet on the third floor of the College’s B Wing.

The renovated space will accommodate nursing classrooms, laboratories, simulation areas, tutoring, and student support services.

The project will give students more opportunities to learn in environments designed to reflect the demands of modern health care, including hands-on practice and simulated clinical experiences.

Additional awards are helping equip the renovated spaces and strengthen the College’s nursing programs. Through the fiscal year 2026 Illinois Community College Board Trades School Grant, 海角社区 received $348,473 for equipment, technology, and other resources.

Two nursing faculty members also received a combined $20,000 through Illinois Board of Higher Education Nursing Faculty Fellowships to support their pursuit of advanced degrees.

Further investments are planned through the fiscal year 2027 ICCB Rural Health Initiative. 海角社区 will receive $271,368 through REACH and $223,573 through ROOTS to provide updated equipment and technology, strengthen health care career pathways, and support students working toward program completion and employment.

The combined awards demonstrate how grant funding can address multiple needs at once: improving instructional facilities, supporting faculty development, modernizing equipment, and helping prepare the next generation of health care professionals.

Supporting students beyond the classroom

A student’s ability to succeed depends on more than what happens in a classroom or laboratory. Mental health, financial pressures, access to resources, and other personal challenges can affect attendance, persistence, and completion.

海角社区 has pursued grant funding to help address those barriers. The College received the competitive fiscal year 2026 ICCB Strengthening Mental Health Supports Grant and a fiscal year 2027 ICCB Mental Health Early Action on Campus allocation. The funding supports expanded access to counseling and mental health resources, 24-hour virtual services through TimelyCare, community referrals, and mental health awareness initiatives.

It also helps provide basic-needs assistance through resources such as the College’s Snack Locker.

These services connect students with help when they need it, recognizing that addressing nonacademic challenges can be an important part of staying in school and completing a credential.

Another significant investment is the College’s five-year federal TRIO Student Support Services grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Education for 2025-30.

The program provides individualized assistance to eligible low-income and first-generation college students and students with disabilities. Services include academic advising, tutoring, transfer assistance, financial literacy education, career exploration, and other support intended to help participants remain enrolled and achieve their educational goals.

By investing in students as well as facilities and equipment, these grants help the College address the multiple factors that influence student success.

Growing the Next Generation of Teachers

海角社区 also worked to strengthen the region’s educator pipeline through a $50,000 Grow Your Own Illinois grant last year.

The initiative helped working paraprofessionals continue their education and pursue teacher licensure while balancing employment and family responsibilities.

Evening hybrid courses offered scheduling flexibility, while assistance with tuition, childcare, transportation, supplies, and other expenses can help participants overcome barriers to completing their education.

The project also supported mentoring and outreach designed to encourage more men to consider teaching careers.

By helping current education professionals advance into teaching positions, the initiative supported individual career development while addressing the broader need to prepare and retain qualified educators in Southern Illinois.

Local Support

The Julia Harrison Bruce Foundation has graciously supported the College on two projects. The recently completed Player Development Center for Baseball and Softball is the region’s premier training facility. In addition to the Player Development Center, the new Prairie Museum is nearing completion in the Harrison Bruce Historical Village.

Beyond Traditional College

海角社区 is committed to providing adult basic education programs to southern Illinois, as well as an alternative high school, Mary Logan High School, housed on the 海角社区 campus. Through these programs, the college receives over $420,000 in grants.

An Investment in Southern Illinois

The grants highlighted here represent only a portion of the funding that supports 海角社区’s mission to enrich lives through learning and community engagement.

Collectively, these investments help transform campus facilities, strengthen academic programs, provide modern training equipment, expand student services, and create pathways to employment.

They also help the College respond to the changing needs of regional employers without placing the full cost of every improvement on students or relying solely on operating revenues.

That work takes on added importance during periods of financial uncertainty, when colleges must make difficult decisions about which programs, services, and capital improvements can move forward.

Grant funding offers another way to advance institutional priorities while maintaining a focus on affordability and access.

鈥淎t 海角社区, we view grants as investments in people,鈥 Overstreet said. 鈥淲hether they support workforce training, student success initiatives, equipment upgrades, or community partnerships, grant dollars create opportunities that have a lasting impact on Southern Illinois.鈥

He said pursuing those opportunities is part of the College’s responsibility to its students, employees, and the communities it serves.

鈥淎s a college, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of every resource available to us,鈥 Overstreet said. 鈥淥ur team works diligently to pursue grants because we know they create opportunities that directly benefit students, employees, and the communities we serve. From workforce development and academic programs to facilities improvements and student support services, grant funding helps us accomplish goals that would be difficult, and in some cases impossible, to achieve through our operating budget alone.鈥

The construction projects visible along Route 13 remind us what those efforts can accomplish. But the larger story extends well beyond the buildings taking shape on campus.

It is a story of staff members researching funding opportunities, preparing detailed applications, documenting community needs, and working through the requirements necessary to turn an idea into a funded project.

For 海角社区, grant funding is more than a line in a budget. It is a tool to expand educational opportunities, strengthen the regional workforce, and invest in southern Illinois’ future.

And as the College continues to grow, one thing remains clear: 海角社区 is taking nothing for GRANTed.

Perfect weather, strong attendance, and overwhelmingly positive feedback helped make this year鈥檚 Southern Illinois Hunting & Fishing Days a major success.

Held on the 海角社区 campus, the annual event once again brought together outdoor enthusiasts, vendors, visitors, and members of the Southern Illinois community for a weekend celebrating hunting, fishing, and the outdoors.

From the crowds that filled campus to the enthusiastic response from vendors and attendees, this year鈥檚 event demonstrated the continued importance of Hunting & Fishing Days to the region.

Pulling off an event this size takes the work of an entire campus community. Behind the scenes, 海角社区 employees worked throughout the weeks leading up to the event and throughout the weekend to prepare facilities, coordinate logistics, support vendors and visitors, and keep everything running smoothly.

The college鈥檚 Facilities team, including Grounds, Maintenance, and Custodial, played a key role, along with the 海角社区 Police Department, IT Support, Marketing, Printing Services, and employees from departments across campus.

The event also required temporary changes to the normal flow of campus, including using and closing parking areas and moving equipment and event materials. Those adjustments, along with ongoing construction on campus, presented additional challenges, but the college community worked together to ensure the weekend could move forward successfully.

That spirit of collaboration was one of this year鈥檚 event highlights.

Departments stepped in to help one another, employees took on new responsibilities, and people across campus worked toward a shared goal: creating a successful experience for visitors, vendors, and the Southern Illinois community.

Next year will mark the 40th Southern Illinois Hunting & Fishing Days, providing an opportunity to celebrate the event鈥檚 history while looking toward its future.

Planning is already underway to build on this year鈥檚 success and continue growing the event in the years ahead. Each year brings an opportunity to improve, expand, and create an even stronger experience for the campus and community.

This year鈥檚 Hunting & Fishing Days was more than a successful weekend. It reflected what can happen when an entire college community works together.

The result was an event 海角社区 can be proud of鈥攁nd a strong foundation for an exciting 40th anniversary celebration next year.

鈥淲e are excited to again host one of the premier events in southern Illinois,鈥 said 海角社区 President Dr. Kirk Overstreet. 鈥淥rganizers have put together a great weekend of vendors and activities that are entertaining and educational.鈥

More than 70 vendors are expected to participate, offering outdoor merchandise, equipment, and information. Hunting and fishing seminars, live music, and other entertainment will take place throughout the weekend. Popular returning attractions include Splash Dogs, the Kids鈥 Fishing Hole, and a BB Gun Range. The event will also feature hunting and fishing seminars.

Due to ongoing construction, the event will have minor changes. Vendor tents will remain in the Blue Parking Lot but will be condensed. All vendors and activities that were previously held in the Brewer Gymnasium will now be held in the Conference Center.

On Saturday, September 26, at 9 a.m. College officials will rededicate Dwight Hoffard Pond. The Pond was officially named in honor of Hoffard in 2014. Dwight Hoffard, the long-time Director of Buildings and Grounds and organizer of the Celebration of Hunting and Fishing Days on the campus, passed away in March. The pond was recently dredged and will be at full capacity as the Kids Fishing Hole during the event.

Admission is $5 per vehicle. Local Boy Scouts will collect food donations and distribute them to local food banks.

The event is supported by sponsors including Title Sponsor Oasis Outdoors. Can-Am, Comfort Inn & Suites, LeafFilter, Banterra Bank, and Timberline are also sponsors. For vendor or event information, contact 海角社区 at 618-985-2828, extension 8541.

海角社区 is continuing its enrollment momentum, with college officials announcing increases in both year-to-year and summer enrollment as the institution prepares to welcome students for the Fall 2026 semester.

A group of student ambassadors sit at a table together in the 海角社区 courtyard.

According to enrollment data released by the college, student credit hours increased 3% from July 2025 to July 2026. Credit hours have also grown 6.2% since 2022, reflecting continued enrollment gains over the past several years.

海角社区 President Dr. Kirk Overstreet said the increases are the result of the college’s ongoing efforts to meet students’ changing needs through flexible scheduling and expanded support services.

“For years, we have focused on what the tenth-day enrollment is for each semester, when the reality is that we are offering more and more classes that do not start on the first day of the semester,” Overstreet said. “Instead, we are offering more 12-, 8-, and 4-week classes to meet the needs of our students. We are also offering more night and weekend services, including our Saturday Sign-Up events and evening student service hours during the week, along with virtual advisement appointments.鈥

The college also reported strong growth during the Summer 2026 semester. Summer headcount enrollment increased 10.1% compared with the previous year, while summer credit hours rose 8.6%.

College officials said the enrollment gains reflect a continued emphasis on expanding access for traditional and nontraditional students through flexible course formats, enhanced student services, and innovative community partnerships.

The Fall 2026 semester begins Aug. 17. To assist prospective and returning students, 海角社区 will host a Saturday Sign-Up event on Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to noon. Students will be able to apply for admission, register for classes, meet with financial aid staff, make tuition payments, and receive assistance from campus offices.

The college will also host its Coffee and College information session for high school students and their parents at 10 a.m. on Aug. 8. The session will cover admissions, scholarships, financial aid, dual credit opportunities, and the transition to college.

Due to ongoing campus construction, individuals attending the Aug. 8 events should enter the campus through the East Entrance.

海角社区 offers associate degrees, career and technical education programs, workforce training, and university transfer opportunities. Classes are available in face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats, including traditional 16-week courses and accelerated 12-, 8-, and 4-week sessions designed to accommodate a variety of student schedules.

Student-athletes are back on the court at 海角社区 after Brewer Gymnasium officially reopened following approval from structural engineers working with the Illinois Capital Development Board, marking another milestone in the college’s ongoing campus transformation.

Basketball court in Brewer Gymnasium.

Earlier this month, the college received clearance to resume activities in the gymnasium, allowing athletic programs to return home after months of practicing and competing at alternate locations while construction and structural repairs were underway.

Athletic Director Greg Starrick said the reopening comes at an important time as fall sports prepare to begin.

“We are excited to get our student-athletes back in the gym,” Starrick said. “Volleyball will begin fall practice soon, and several of our men’s and women’s basketball players will return to campus in July.”

Starrick also thanked area schools and neighboring community colleges for supporting the Volunteers during the temporary closure.

“I am grateful to all of the area high schools that allowed us to practice in their facilities, and to our fellow community colleges that allowed us to play our home games in their gyms during the second half of the season,” he said.

The reopening of Brewer Gymnasium comes as work continues on the college’s Logan Hall and West Lobby expansion project. The project recently received clearance to proceed following a structural review.

According to Assistant Vice President of Construction, Planning, and Facilities Management Jeremy Sargent, demolition work is largely complete, earthwork has wrapped up, and crews are preparing to begin concrete work over the coming months.

Although the gymnasium has reopened, Sargent said portions of the athletic complex remain closed while structural beam repairs continue.

“The athletic offices, restrooms, lobby, and concession area remain closed because structural beam repair work is still underway,” Sargent said. “Those spaces cannot reopen until that work is completed.”

The Logan Hall and West Lobby expansion project is now scheduled for completion in December 2027.

Several departments that were temporarily relocated during construction have now returned to their permanent locations. Risk Management and Digital Marketing staff are back in their offices, and Testing Services has resumed operations in its campus location. However, the E133 computer lab will continue serving as the college’s testing site for the foreseeable future.

The reopening of Brewer Gymnasium is one of several milestones in an unprecedented period of construction across the 海角社区 campus.

Construction of the college’s new Career and Technical Education Center remains on schedule for completion in December 2026. Partially funded by a federal grant, the state-of-the-art facility will house Automotive Services, Auto Body, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), and Welding programs, expanding workforce training opportunities in southern Illinois.

Another major federally funded project is the renovation of the third floor of the Communications Building, which will become the new home of the college’s Nursing programs. Construction crews are currently installing metal stud framing, electrical systems, plumbing, and HVAC infrastructure. The renovation is expected to be completed in late spring 2027.

Additional projects continue to move forward across campus. The Harrison Bruce Foundation’s Prairie Museum, located within the Harrison Bruce Historical Village, is progressing ahead of schedule and will become a significant addition to the region’s historical attractions. Meanwhile, dredging work at Hoffard Pond is expected to be completed before the start of the fall semester.

College officials have also announced the next phase of campus improvements. Renovations to the current Nursing program space and the Conference Center are in the design phase and are expected to begin in 2027.

Despite months of construction, office relocations, and changing traffic patterns, students and employees have continued to navigate the evolving campus as preparations for the fall semester continue. New signage has been installed throughout campus to assist visitors, and a dedicated construction webpage on the college’s website provides updates on closures, relocations, and project progress.

College President Dr. Kirk Overstreet said the temporary inconveniences created by construction will ultimately strengthen the institution for future generations.

“What an exciting time at 海角社区,” Overstreet said. “Everywhere you look, there are signs of progress. Change can be a little messy at times, but that’s the nature of improvement. When the dust settles, we’ll have taken another step toward making our campus an even better place for our students, employees, and community.”

Overstreet said the extensive improvements represent a long-term investment in student success, workforce development, and the future of southern Illinois.

“We are building more than buildings,” he said. “We are creating opportunities that will serve our students and our region for decades to come.”

The new Community Impact Program will operate at the Robert L. Mees Centre on the 海角社区 campus and is designed to help student parents balance the demands of higher education while ensuring their children have access to a safe, supportive environment after school.

The program will begin Aug. 17, the first day of the College’s fall semester, and will operate Monday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Programming will not be offered on days when the college is closed, or classes are not in session.

The initiative will serve up to 16 school-aged children, ages 6 to 18, whose parents are enrolled at 海角社区. Eligible students must be enrolled in at least three credit hours during the semester. There is no cost to participate.

The partnership is intended to remove barriers that often prevent student parents from completing their educational goals while providing meaningful opportunities for their children to learn and grow.

College officials said the partnership reflects 海角社区’s continued commitment to supporting students’ needs, both inside and outside the classroom, by providing resources that encourage student success and persistence toward graduation.

“We are so excited about this program and to continue our collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Illinois,” said 海角社区 President Dr. Kirk Overstreet. “This will be extremely beneficial to our students, particularly those in our evening nursing cohort who are trying to balance family and school.”

Youth enrolled in the program will participate in activities based on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Illinois’ nationally recognized core program areas, including education and career development through homework assistance, tutoring and STEM activities; health and wellness with nutrition education, physical activity and the Healthy Habits curriculum; character and leadership development through leadership clubs and service-learning projects; arts programming featuring creative expression, digital media and music; and sports, fitness and recreation.

In addition to academic support and enrichment activities, participants will have access to positive adult mentors and structured programming designed to promote personal growth, healthy lifestyles, and overall well-being.

Space in the program is limited. Additional information about eligibility and enrollment will be available through 海角社区 Student Services and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Illinois before the start of the fall semester. 海角社区 will host its Annual Juneteenth Celebration on Wednesday, June 17, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. in the College Conference Center. The free community event is open to the public and will feature live entertainment, educational activities, food, and family-friendly programming honoring the significance of Juneteenth.

The celebration will feature a keynote address by Dr. Paul Frazier, Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Attendees will also enjoy live music from The J Sound Band.

Food will be provided by Smokin K’s BBQ and Cajun Cuisine and Pepsi MidAmerica. In addition to entertainment and refreshments, guests can participate in a variety of activities, including poetry and historical readings, Human Bingo, local vendor displays, games, and other family-oriented attractions.

鈥淛uneteenth is an opportunity to celebrate freedom, reflect on our nation鈥檚 history, and come together as a community,鈥 said 海角社区 President Dr. Kirk Overstreet. 鈥淲e invite everyone to join us for an evening of education, entertainment, and fellowship.鈥

Attendees are encouraged to bring donations and school supplies to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Illinois and Mary Logan High School. The collection effort is intended to support local youth and families throughout the region.

Due to ongoing construction projects on the 海角社区 campus, visitors attending the event are asked to park in the Gold and Blue parking lots and follow posted signage to the Conference Center.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom more than two years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday celebrates freedom, resilience, culture, and progress.

For more information about the event, contact 海角社区 at (618) 985-2828 or visit the College鈥檚 Juneteenth webpage.
